Brainspotting

Neuroscience Gives us a New Answer

“Brainspotting is a powerful, focused treatment method that works by identifying, processing and releasing core neurophysiological sources of the symptoms. Brainspotting is a simultaneous form of diagnosis and treatment,”

Anyone who has touched anxiety, depression, feelings of insecurity, lack of self-esteem, bullying or any form of abuse knows that something deep down is occurring. That as much as you try to feel well, positive, energetic, with hope and a desire to change, something kidnaps you, invades you or drags you down again and again.

My professional journey to being so skillful in enabling people to be free of anxiety, panic attacks and deep insecurities… began with this observation. As an expert in Peak Performance for 26 years, I found that most of my clients had blocks that were beyond their conscious control. As hard as they tried, they just kept going round in circles over the same ground, tripping up over the same stone.

I realised that it wasn´t because of resistance, lack of will or desire, there was something much deeper and uncontrollable going on, something that began with past experiences that were hidden in their subconscious. I decided to take it upon myself to find the answers that at that time did not exist in the world of therapy!

The Causes

“To understand and be free of what causes us to suffer; we have to go beyond the logical and controllable. We have to sink into the deepest realms of the psyche illuminate them and rescue the hidden and disordered parts of our mind”

All our experiences are stored in the deeper and older parts of the brain (the Limbic System, the Autonomic System and the Reptilian Brain). These parts of the brain are underneath our consciousness and we have no idea of what they contain.

When we have difficult, adverse or traumatic experiences, the older brain “switches-off” the part of our brain that thinks, talks to us and remembers things consciously (the neo-cortex). They do so because the brain interprets these experiences as a survival threat to which it needs to give an extremely fast response.

It is an instinctive and primordial protection response which depends on using only its oldest and fastest faculties in the same way as our Stone Age ancestors would have done when they were attacked by a saber-tooth tiger, for example. The new, thinking part of our brain works very slowly compared to the older parts of the brain. In the hands of our new and thinking brain we would not have had time to escape and save ourselves.

As a result you never have the chance to “make sense of” these experiences and they become stored as if in time capsules in your deep brain. This occurs because meaning can only be given by the new and thinking part of our brain, which during these experiences was switched off and so was unable to do so.

However, these “time capsules” cannot be stored in isolation. Every part of our brain is connected to every other part and these memories seep out producing a sense of dread, insecurity, anxiety, hyper-vigilance, feelings of being lost, compulsions, obsessions… This can happen even though there seems to be no reason for it.

The Results of Brainspotting

The results are that my clients quickly begin to feel different and to see their difficulties and life in a distinct way.

The difficult, traumatic and adverse experiences that they had fade away into vague and distant memories. They feel relaxed, more centred and stronger and the distressing feelings in their body calm into peace.

I also help them to develop their character to gain strength, clarity, courage, sweetness, self-care, joy, fun, freedom, self-esteem…

It is as if the storm at last has ceased, the sun comes out in a bright blue sky and at last they are able to sail forward on tranquil, clear and enjoyable waters.

How Does Brainspotting Work

As the causes of the feelings anxiety, fear, insecurity… are located in the subconscious and non-verbal parts of the brain, often traditional therapies are unable to resolve them.

Brainspotting, however, is a powerful, focused treatment method that works by identifying, processing and releasing core neurophysiological sources of the symptoms. Brainspotting is a simultaneous form of diagnosis and treatment. Its effects are enhanced with the use of Bilateral Sounds. Brainspotting is a method that penetrates powerfully and directly to the Deep Brain and at the same time it is focused, and containing.

Brainspotting works with the deep older brain and the body through its direct access to the Autonomic and Limbic systems within the body’s Central Nervous System. It uses the beneficial brain processes of the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep phase in a controlled, awake and conscious way.

In this way Brainspotting is accordingly a physiological tool and treatment which has profound psychological, emotional, and physical consequences.
